For some reason, even though Amanda has warned me that this show deviates highly from the manga, I still am fairly amused by it and have opted to watch it during my finals over Suteki Tantei Labyrinth (which is a bit too childish for me, I left off at episode 4 and am not compelled to continue watching it, for now). These two episodes are fairly standard for a tantei show. In episode 3, the mystery wasn’t all really that hard to solve. It sort of made Yako seem kind of slow because she didn’t realize that the poison (obviously) came from the ceiling which she personally saw. Now, it’s established that Yako is just a ploy for Neuro to find mysteries and eat them but still…if you consistently have a really out-of-it, not too bright schoolgirl who just happens to solve crimes, it’s going to get pretty old. I still hate the way Neuro looks - like maybe a distant cousin of Yugi from Yu-Gi-Oh! but there’s nothing I can do about it. It’s the beads, they distract me. And also, the whole demon form of Neuro being a weird toucan bird (?) is effed up…it’s not even quirky, it’s just messed up.

As messed up as the introduction of Akane, the possessed pony tail hair in the wall in their office…who types on a computer and helped solve the mystery in episode 3. Points to them for making something…unique, but it made me lose my appetite while I was eating just because I do not need to watch a disembodied hair piece trying to communicate. Godai as usual, is an amusing character because it’s obvious he’s going to be the butt of most jokes. Neuro is highly abusive to Yako, pushing her face, grabbing her head violently and threatening her with things like “I’ll crush your brain”, etc. She responds sometimes with a faint smile which just gives me some BDSM vibes. I guess some girls just like it rough…with their demon mystery-eating boss (?). The other interesting thing is the death of Yako’s father which looks like it’s going to be an on-going investigation. I really hope there’s a larger storyline that connects things rather than just Yako and Neuro solving not very mysterious mysteries because then it’ll just be tedious.

Episode 4 was highly amusing, in the way that maybe crack monkeys would find Conan O’Brien talking amusing. The mother who has issues and takes on the ugly visage of a dog, who terrorizes the city is pretty nifty. It’s disturbing actually because she’s holding a baby but I appreciate this tidbit of social commentary on losers who feel frustrated and in a prison within their lives, but must take it out in seemingly violent ways and yet are in the end, dogs because they’re slaves to their problems and can’t reconcile them like normal human beings should, given the facilities of reason, logic and so forth. In fact, a lot of the show so far has focused on failures in society - a chef who’s obsessed with the perfect tasting food, a rich girl who’s isolated since childhood, a failed comedian and a typical mother/wife sort of woman. That’s something positive about the show in the sense that it doesn’t need to resort to crazy looking demons, creatures of the underworld, supernatural elements (other than Neuro and maybe future characters) as enemies. It just speaks volumes about how human nature is vile enough by itself which after all is too true.
