Blood: The Last Vampire - Oh Saya…

t0a5t   May 13, 2007

""If you enjoy action, drama, and supernatural elements, you’ll like this movie. And if you were a fan of Buffy: the Vampire Slayer, you’re in for a treat! Though, after watching this, the real slayer is Saya. Of course, if you’re like me, and love a “bloody” movie, this should also be up your alley. ^-^

""The story is set in post-WWII Japan. Its main protagonist is a girl named Saya, and her choice of weapon is a sword; and she happens to also work for the United States government. However, Saya has a dark secret. She hunts Chiropterans, who are demonic creatures that feast on the blood of humans for their survival.

Posing as a student, Saya infiltrates the American military installation, Yohkoto Air Base, and begins her search for these demonic creatures.

""For an animated movie, it was quite short. And when I say short, it was epic in its shortness: 48 minutes and that is all. However, the 48 minutes is jammed packed with blood on top of more blood!

Visually, Blood: The Last Vampire is incredibly stunning. The characters are life-like in their movements, and the attentive details given to the backgrounds are fantastic. The play between light and shadow sent chills up my spine. It was remarkably dark and foreboding, and the music added to the “eerie” quality to the film! I almost forgot that I was watching an animated film during the opening sequence because Saya literally explodes onto the screen, and it was fluidly achieved… her facial expression was priceless.

I must say, though, hearing the dialogue in both English and Japanese was a wonderful surprise for me, and seeing the intergration of cultures on the American base was fascinating, too. Saya’s lips were definitely American-inspired! It reminded me of Angelina Jolie’s lips actually; I wonder…

Storyline-wise, I was disappointed. I think I’d have preferred to learn more about Saya’s background. Like what happened to her family? How did she come to work for the United States government? I was left with more questions than answers. The movie felt more like a pilot for a series, which is I’ve heard of Blood+. I’ve yet to see it, but here’s hoping Blood+ will be able to answer some of my questions.

Overall, I give this film seven Pocky sticks out of ten.
