My-Hime: Would You Do Anything to Protect What You Hold Most Precious to You?

If you’re familiar with the manga at all, you might have noticed differences between the manga and anime of My-HiME. But, it shouldn’t bother anyone so much because the animation is fabulous ^_^ (And actually, I think the storyline in the anime is written better and better executed than it was in the manga; of course, this is just my opinion).

Mai Tokiha leads a tough life; not only is she a student, but she also takes cares of her brother, Takumi, and works a part-time job. Their luck changes when she and her brother both receive scholarships to attend the prestigious Fuka Academy. Little does Mai know that she was specifically chosen to come to this school.

HiME stands for “highly-advanced materializing equipment”, and upon arrival, Mai discovers that she is one of the twelve HiMEs chosen to protect the school from monsters called “orphans” and from a nefarious organization. Yet, the real battle doesn’t begin until the twelve battle princesses find out their true purpose: to save the world and to protect what’s most precious to them.

I must admit that the ending to the series was exactly what I expected. I even predicted that Yuichi Tate would be cheesy (but he was quite cute, too, in his profession of love!). And Mikoto-chan was adorable, even when she went psychotic with those glowing yellow eyes of hers. I was surprised to find out about the Student Council president Shizuru Fujino and her feelings for Natsuki Kuga, but I had a distinct feeling about that as well. A pregnant Yukariko was no shocker, either; however, Sister Nao and Sister Miyu were. And I was so glad that Tate finally confessed his true feelings.

Anyways, I’m glad that My-HiME returned to its comedic roots; it got so serious in the latter episodes that I couldn’t help but feel sympathy for the characters. I cried when Akane was defeated. Cried when Akira was defeated. And I wanted to put Mikoto in time out, but also understood that she didn’t really realize what she was doing. (She really, really liked Mai. Even claimed Mai’s “melons” as hers!)

Nevertheless, I’m quite surprised for such a huge character list, (I counted over thirty with different personalities and they managed to all mesh and work with each other, which I must give kudos out to, oh dear, this is such a terrible run-on), that most of the “loose” ends were tied. However, I must admit that there was no real development on Mashiro Kazakana’s character. I would’ve liked to see more about her. And how did Nagi become Mashiro’s servant all of the sudden? And why were those two so cozy at the end? And I remember in episode 7 that Reito Kanzaki mentioned to Mikoto that he wasn’t her brother, so I was confused to find out he was the Obsidian Prince!

Overall, I enjoyed My-HiME. This definitely is in my top 10. If you like action, drama, comedy, and schoolgirls, then this anime is for you! ^-^ Ten Pocky sticks!

The manga was based off the anime which is probably the reason why it wasn’t as good as the anime. I watched the first four episodes but there was too much fanservice for my tastes (it’s so obvious with the shoujo ai and everything that it’s aimed for drooling fanboys).

i liked the manga more that the anime call me wierd if you want to…
