Clannad ScreenshotClannad is an adaptation of Visual Arts, a game from Key. The anime has done quiet a good job of combining the game’s plot lines and making them into one really good show. The characters are balanced, each having personal matters to face. The main character in the show is Tomoya Okazaki. Other key characters include Youhei Sunohara, Fuko, Kyou Fujibayashi, Kotomi, and Tomoyo Sakagami.

What is good with the anime, especially for those of you who have played the game itself, is that each character is introduced coupled with their own issues to deal with. The background history of each character is also studied in every episode. The plot devices used to weave the threads around, as well as the overall relationship between Tomoya and Nagisa, should also be paid close attention.

The biggest strength of Clannad lies in its art. The background scenes give a realistic feel to the mood of the story. It is done by Kyoto Animation and just by mentioning their name already means that the art is great.

Clannad ScreenshotThe character design does not stray much from the original appearances and designs in the game and the OVA. The hair designs have a sheer feel to it, and it adds an air of mystery to each character every time the wind blows through. Some of the imperfections are glossed over with the use of bright colors, but it is just a small scratch.

The choice for situational music is another plus for Clannad. Jun Maeda, Magome Togoshi and Shinji Orito created a soundtrack fro Clannad that conveys a lot of majestic moods, from the melancholy and poignant to the uplifting and spirited. Each character has a matching piece for their personas on this soundtrack. The recurring background tracks in each episode are the centerpiece of this soundtrack.

Clannad ScreenshotClannad also got this soft, easy listen song as an opening. The ending however starts off light and playful then expands into a holistic, powerful yet assertive anthem. The backing chorus in the song and the use of gongs adds a finishing touch to an already memorable ending.

This is an anime that has an excellent presentation, a complex storyline that requires careful direction, and an unwavering pair of acting and musical work of art. Clannad is a show that makes you think about the value of life. It is an anime that a lot of people will surely enjoy.

Ha ha ha sorry for disappearing out of the blue like that -_______-. I’ve been really outta touch with anime world in general so forgive me. Now back on topic…

I ended up dropping CLANNAD after episode 19. Yep. While I agree that the animation and music were nice, they focused way too much on Fuuko and Kotomi (both who annoyed the hell outta me). It felt like Tomoyo, Kyou, and Ryou got shafted into the side and by episode 16 I felt like I was watching a trainwreck. I do like Nagisa though and I will be looking out for the After Story (because I heard it’s good).

Oh and somewhat irrelavant but I managed to hook a good friend of mine with CLANNAD. I have never seen someone turn into otaku so fast….Yeah anyways hopefully I’ll get back on track now LOL.
