The Anime Invasion of Disney World
Amanda Liu January 6, 2008

So I’m finally back from my vacation. While I was in Orlando, my family decided to check out Downtown Disney (a section of Disney World). To my surprise, I discovered animu lurking in the shadows of a place widespread with Disney promotion. Now it’s time to showcase my rare
findings.

First up is Naruto because the staff clearly understands its magnificence. They were even kind enough to put up a cheap, low quality paper sign for all of the customers to marvel at. Notice that they display stuff like Simpsons on the top of the shelves though.

Nearby there was a shelf selling calendars and I found these two. I was kinda tempted to get the Tsubasa calendar even if I’m not really into it anymore.

More Naruto and NANA because that’s what we all love, right? Though I admit NANA’s actually quite addictive to read once you give it a fair shot.

Upstairs they put Naruto shirts because it’s cool like that. They also put in FMA and Inuyasha for good measure. Now everybody dig into your wallets and support your top fandoms!

Probably the most interesting I saw especially since it was actually painted on the shelf. By the way, that shelf was HUGE and included anime DVDs and a couple of figures. I lost the picture of the whole thing though. It’s a pretty typical bookshelf with stuff like Death Note, Claymore, and Busou Renkin displayed in the front and stuff like Emma hidden. Oh and there was no Gunslinger Girl so yeah epic fail FTW. Just kidding.

OMFGWTFBBQ? AVRIL LAVIGNE HAS A MANGA??? I guess so though it seems as if she’s not the mangaka. I took a peek in it and it’s just Avril Lavigne promotion. I haven’t seen this is any other bookstore or anything though.

I find it kind of funny how they make it look like how every schoolgirl in Japan dresses like a freako. What happened to seifuku? Overall, I was amazed that Disney allowed this store (Virgin) to carry stuff that didn’t promote well Disney stuff. They had Kingdom Hearts manga displayed in the front but every Barnes & Nobles/Borders has that. Though none of this matters because people come to Disney World to buy Disney stuff, not anime. Like me.

January 6th, 2008 at 7:28 pmI think Downtown Disney is advertised for an ‘older audience.’ Not that kids can’t go there, but it’s a family thing overall. And Disney understands that adults are around just as much as children are. So Downtown Disney has Planet Hollywood and nightclubs as well.
Glad to hear that there’s some anime; we’ll wean ‘em over.

January 7th, 2008 at 2:24 amCrisu> The power of otakuism shall one day reign the world!!!! And yeah, I know Downtown Disney is targeted at an older audience. I just thought that they’d try to enforce an “EVERYTHING MUST CONTAIN DISNEY” policy.
totoum> Same here. The story is so bad it’s good.
lzludicus> I wouldn’t be surprised. I just checked out that one store because it was humongous and found all this crap so I decided to take pictures of it.

January 9th, 2008 at 11:47 amHa ha, one of my roommates actually owns that Japanese schoolgirl book. The best part is that it has a quiz that tells you what kind of crazy dress style suits your personality (I think I got gothic lolita … oi!)

Senna> OMFG NOW I WANT IT.
Darren> Inside is the dumbest story with Avril Lavigne promotion. And how am I doing…I’m happy because I’m at the end of a stupid high school soap opera type of thing. I have finals though :(.
Kabitzin> Touche. And yes that cover is so awesome. To make fun of. Dang it, I should have bought it.
