A Quick Guide to the Unfinished
Alex Papillon June 27, 2007
There’s something about some shows that I just can’t be bothered with about half way or a quarter of the way. Either, every episode is the same and nothing happens for 25 episodes or by my own vices, I spoil it for myself and would rather not watch ahead. Also, I have a bad habit of not finishing things - books, movies, shows, essays, projects, you name it. What I think though is perhaps, these shows aren’t really all they’re cracked up to be. True, some of them aren’t that great in the first place but here is my unfinished list. But, should I give them another chance? Figure out what episode I stopped at and try and remember what happened up until then? Keep in mind, the pros and cons are up until what I’ve watched NOT the entire show.
1. Witch Hunter Robin
I had relatively good expectations for this anime, since I had watched Ergo Proxy and I loved the darkness of it. I also liked the character design for both series. I thought Witch Hunter Robin would be a slightly obscure, but somewhat action oriented with perhaps some novel magic motifs. Instead, as someone had mentioned in a review, it’s more of Magic CSI (minus the gory bodies of course). Although the episodes weren’t so bad by themselves, each episode was basically a mystery that the team had to solve and find the culprit. I got through halfway before I decided I couldn’t stand watching a few more episodes of that. Although, I know that the ending goes somewhere I didn’t want to skip ahead and instead I put it on hiatus. Well, that was pretty much a year ago…I didn’t like any of the characters that much. Robin is okay, but she doesn’t have a strong personality and Amon kind of pisses me off. The animation is pretty good; sometimes the characters look very line-y and rough when the zoom goes out but that’s just a small minor detail. I liked the OP and ED fair enough but I don’t think I’ll be finishing this one anytime soon.
Pros: Good animation, a good mood, characters are somewhat likable
Cons: Slow plot line, weak internal character development
2. Welcome to the NHK!
When I stopped watching it, I actually did like it - I just had final exams and summer holiday. It sort of got old a bit but I still enjoyed the dark cynicism and mocking nature throughout the show. It wasn’t as extreme as I’d like, and I got annoyed at the protagonist at times but I felt sorry for him and that’s hard for me to feel. I did not like the girl (see how I can’t remember their names) but she didn’t appear very much. I didn’t mind the main character’s friend but I wasn’t that interested in the whole eroge thing, not surprisingly. However, I plan to finish watching it because I did enjoy it. Somewhat. Plus, the ED sequence is A.W.E.S.O.M.E. Babababa….
Pros: The ED (well up until whichever ep it may have changed), interesting plot, parody/mocking
Cons: Loses steam early, vague plot direction
3. Bakumatsu Kikansetsu Irohanihoheto
While I agree that this is an overlooked anime, I also don’t find it THAT good. Having watched 7 or 8 episodes of it, I didn’t particularly like any of the characters. Not to mention, remember any of their names, at all. Which is not a problem, but it doesn’t help when the characters aren’t developed/don’t seem interesting - for me. I like the animation, it’s very good and it’s beautiful even at times, with the colours and the background. The action is also very good and exciting, at times. It probably helps to know Japanese history at this time to fully appreciate the political situation and the characters’ role in it. The bit of mysticism definitely drew me in in the first episode but I got lost amongst just how much was happening. The opening is also great, done by Yuki Kajiura and the music is to be commended for as well. I just have to pay attention…and stay awake.
Pros: Great set-up, interesting range of characters, good animation
Cons: Lacks any compelling factor, poorly developed characters
4. Chrono Crusade
I watched it mainly because of Rosette’s seiyuu Tomoko Kawakami who did Utena Tenjou in one of my favourite series, Shoujo Kakumei Utena. This was one of the series I ruined by reading what happens at the end, which I can say, kind of ruins the whole thing. It was fairly entertaining - I found Rosette kind of obnoxious and annoying and the sibling-chasing theme was getting stale for me so I gave it up. Easy watching - mediocre animation, music and I didn’t quite like the character design but I got used to it. I suppose the appeal would be nuns with guns.
Pros: Entertaining, Plot moves along quite well
Cons: Mediocre in most departments, Chrono
5. Tsubasa Chronicle
Good God, this is such a BAD series. I can’t decide if Bee Train’s at fault or if CLAMP got lazy and just wanted to Kingdom Hearts their characters. I watched it and things were the same, go to a world - get a power - beat bad guy - Sakura remembers a bit. I only watched 11 episodes or so but I got the idea. I only watched it that long to see if anything was going to happen but no. That’s all there is to it. I would almost use the word scam, but that’s not quite true. Kajiura nicely does the music, but it isn’t her best work and like Bee Train’s bad habits, is often repeated which gets tiresome. I will definitely not finish watching this, not even the two new characters (can’t remember names again) can help it. And definitely no second season for me.
Pros: CLAMP’s beautiful design, Kajiura as the composer
Cons: Everthing else
6. Death Note
I might get slammed for this one, not sure but although it’s very well written (clever, engaging, suspenseful and all that) I just didn’t want to watch many more episodes of psychosis and opted to read the ending on Wikipedia. It didn’t phase me out and not watching the rest of it didn’t bother me either so that’s where I stand. The animation is good and the characters are well developed but alas, it didn’t engage me that much. It’s probably a good series, I just don’t care much for it. Too bad though because Mamoru Miyano is Light and he’s a good seiyuu. And I just want to call Light an assclown here and now.
Pros: Excellent plot/setting, good and interesting characters, good animation
Cons: For me personally, I just didn’t care enough to keep going

7. Paradise Kiss
Okay. Basically, I admit that Ai Yazawa’s art skills are unique and her stories are worthwhile, in some ways and although this show mimics the fashion industry - it’s as pointless and empty even if it looks beautiful on the surface. Like the main character whom I can’t stand: Yukari/Caroline. Lazy, rude, boring, has no backbone, is rather stupid, self-pitying/wallowing/whiny, BORING, has no reason for any sympathy. She’s not starving, she’s not turning into chiropteran, she hasn’t got a terminal illness. The other characters are also annoying and have no sense of reality - maintaining a stupid fantasy of pseudo romantic decadence but mostly being complete bullshit. I don’t care if the manga is better, I am not a fan of Yazawa’s themes. Unless it’s even if someone is beautiful, being a complete idiot comes through no matter what.
Pros: Good animation, attractive character design, Tommy Feburary6’s “Lonely in Gorgeous”
Cons: Everything else
I’ll review any series I actually finish eventually, but don’t count on Tsubasa. It’s almost going on my blacklist which currently only has Demonbane which is unbearable after watching 1 episode.

June 27th, 2007 at 6:52 pmRegarding Witch Hunter Robin, the episodic case-of-the-week format actually stops midway through and the story actually kicks in and Amon arguably gets more likable. I think episode 13-14 is when it picks up.

June 27th, 2007 at 8:40 pmFinally I feel less alone with not caring about Death Note. I’ve read some two volumes of the manga simply because everyone was singing its praise, and yeah, it was okay, but I simply didn’t find it engaging. (And before someone accuses me of having a short attention span, one of my favorite series is Legend of Galactic Heroes which is basically 110 episodes of talking.) Also, I don’t find the basic idea and conflict particularly brilliant or “deep.”

June 27th, 2007 at 8:50 pmMy two cents…
1. Witch Hunter Robin: loved it when I was watching it, in retrospect it needed more character development and not such a rushed ending. Would still recommend it, though.
2. NHK: got boring for me fast, dropped after 11 episodes. The manga was funnier, but went on for too long without ever getting out of its rut.
3. Iroha: I liked it for the period setting and atmosphere but it was only on second viewing that I learned everyone’s names and understood what was going on. Quite enjoyable, but not for everyone *shamelessly plugs my parody version*
4. Chrono Crusade: enjoyed at first but ultimately didn’t seem worth it.
5. Tsubasa: the last arc of season one is good but I can’t blame anyone who doesn’t want to watch this as there’s lots of boredom and stills (don’t even touch season 2).
6. Death Note: liked the manga, anime didn’t do much for me.
7. Parakiss: not great, but I enjoyed it enough to last twelve episodes.

June 27th, 2007 at 9:40 pmFrom the list the only ones I’ve seen/started/dropped are:
1. Witch Hunter Robin: dropped it after episode 2. I got bored.
2. Tsubasa: Saw one episode and was like “Oops.. not for me!”.
3. Death Note: First 10 episodes of the anime was HOT. Loved the story and I couldn’t wait for the subs to come out. Read the manga but at some point, I lost interest.

June 27th, 2007 at 10:23 pm1. Witch Hunter Robin was worth watching the whole way through, but it did have a long stretch of slowness before it got good
4. Chrno Crusade … I didn’t finish this one either ^^; Though I’ve heard it gets good in the second half.
6. Death Note, another one I didn’t finish. I really liked Death Note, but once a certain character died, I lost interest.
7. Paradise Kiss–I’m curious as to where you stopped. Yukari spends a good deal of time being a spoiled brat, but she does grow up in the end. And yeah, I found her more likable in the manga, but if you hate the characters already, it probably won’t change your mind ^^; Personally I found George’s simultaneously attractive and repulsive personality more interesting.

June 28th, 2007 at 1:36 amI’m glad some of you didn’t think Death Note was THAT good. (Milly, I know eh? Too bad, oh well)
And I did watch NANA the live action movie, which I didn’t mind so perhaps her work was just a bit…warped by the 12 episode anime.
I take it I should definitely finish Witch Hunter Robin. Will do.

June 28th, 2007 at 7:19 am4. Chrono Crusade: Read the manga and didn’t find anything interesting about it so I dropped it after volume 1. I’ve never watched anime and I don’t plan on it.
5. Tsubasa: Last year, I admit I was a Tsubasa-tard. I never realized how bad it was until the second season fillers when I couldn’t stand it and dropped it. I’m still reading the manga though for whatever reason. Looking back, how did I like this series to begin with?
6. Death Note: First I marathoned this for about 15 episodes and I thought I loved it. Then as it came out weekly, it started becoming a painful chore and I realized I never enjoyed it but I was trying to mold in with other people’s opinions. I couldn’t stand it after 19 and dropped it. I’m not reading the manga even if you paid me.
I didn’t bother with the rest nor do I ever plan to.

June 28th, 2007 at 9:44 pmlol, I’m half way through most of those series too. Witch Hunter Robin was great character wise (and i love her hair), but plot wise it didnt leave me egging for more. NHM I’ve seen a few of with friends but not bothered enough to watch on my own. Chrono cruisade I’ve seen one or two but I don’t like old anime. Tsubasa, well, everyone wondered why I was bothering with watching so much of this in the first place, it is pretty boring. And yep, I’m stuck on 32 with Death Note, and now I can’t find a torrent for 33. Sigh. I’d also add NANA to that list, amoung with countless others.
Then again, I’ve never really been that renouned for my vast attention span. It could well be to do with the way I get very lost in plots and keep forgetting the main characters names >_>

July 1st, 2007 at 7:08 amTsubasa: Even the manga fans hated the anime. So you’re not alone.
DN: I dropped it after a few episodes too since I’ve read the manga and thought the anime offered nothing new.
ParaKiss: I liked the manga, didn’t like the anime.
NHK: Dropped it after a few eps too.

July 11th, 2007 at 11:16 amMy thoughts…
As far as Wich Hunter Robin goes, I’ve seen a good quarter of it, and I kinda lost interest too. Or maybe it was just me, as I was busy at the time with work. The characters weren’t appealing (which is a must when they’re the protagonist) :P.
I’ve heard so much hype about Chrono Crusade, I’ve kinda been staying waway from it. The whole concept seems bland and overdone to me.
Lastly is Death Note. I LOVED the manga. The art is amazing and top notch. It was suspenseful and a piece of pure genius. Although, I do admit that I didn’t feel this way until my second read through. (Well, actually, I only read up to volume 10 the first time, then had to wait for the rest to be published in Englsih by Viz).Although, the first time reading, I did lose interest after a certain character died halfway through. ‘That certain charcter’ was my favourite in the entire series.
The anime was interesting, but pretty much followed the manga (almost word for word at some times) so I found it a bit dull watching right after reading the series.
