I know this is quite an old series already but it’s one of my favorites despite the fact that many anime fans don’t like it. Well, people have different tastes. The animation and story may not be top-notch but this anime is quite amusing and to my liking, so I had to write a review. Please bear with me.
DNA² was created by Masakazu Katsura and was first realeased on October 7, 1994. I first found out about this anime back in college as referred to by a classmate. He told me that it’s really good and funny so I looked for a video and bought it. I bought the complete series.
DNA² is 15-episode series. It is one of the funniest anime series I’ve ever seen (probably second to Doraemon). Although it is mainly comedy, it’s also a mix of action and drama. It also has the most unique concept for a story. The story happened in a modern day Japan but there’s future world involved. I’m not sure if I saw complete nudity in any of the episodes but there were scenes that looked like it’s getting there.
One of the main characters in the story, Karin, came from the future with a mission to inject a DNA-altering medicine to the person who was the cause of all their troubles in her world (the future). This person, also the main character, is Junta Momonari. He was said to be the Mega-Playboy who became the root of the family of Mega-Playboys (boys with extra-ordinary charisma over girls) that became the cause of over-population in Karin’s time. The strange thing is Junta looks far from someone with a mega-playboy qualities. He had the strange problem with the ladies. Whenever a girl shows-off her body, he throws up.
When Karin confronted Junta, she injected him with the medicine and went back to her time thinking she accomplished her mission. But she found out that she left the real medicine she was supposed to inject. Karin gave Junta the wrong medicine that actually woke up the mega-playboy inside him.
I saw this movie in Japanese and it seems that no English version is available. The graphics and animation looked a little plain and old to me but I had no problems with it since the comedy and the story makes up for it.
This anime is one of my favorites because it’s unique and the story is very creative. I enjoyed watching all 15 episodes. I let a couple of friends borrow my video and they enjoyed it to and we ended up talking about it. I recommend this to anyone especially those who like funny stuff.
