La Corda d’Oro #1: I’ve Always Wanted A Magic Violin

La Corda d’OroLa Corda d’Oro #1 by Yuki Kure

Seisou Academy is no regular academy. Its very existence came from a young man who loved everything about music. One day, this young man encountered an injured fairy whom he befriended and took care of. Because of his generosity, the fairy named Lili granted the young man’s wish. Thus, Seisou Academy was built. The academy divides its student population into two groups: those who wear the gray uniforms are the “regular” students, and those who wear the cream-colored uniforms are students who have chosen their musical instrument as their course of study.

Every year, the academy holds an annual musical competition. Usually, only students from the music department are chosen. However, this year, someone from the “regular” class has been chosen as a participant!

Enter second year “regular” student Hino Kahoko, who has a fateful encounter with Lili at the school’s entrance. A surprise to the both of them, Lili is quite pleased because no one else was able to hear him. At first, Kaho-chan is completely against the idea as she has never played an instrument in her life. Yet, Lili assures her and gives her a magical violin, explaining that it can be played by anyone as long as they have the music in their heart. Relunctantly, Kaho-chan agrees and decides to compete in the contest. Yet, not everyone is thrilled to have a non-music student enter the competition.

Third year music student Tsukimori Len is Kaho-chan’s rival for both have chosen the violin as their musical instrument. The other two third year music students are the always smiling trumpet player, Kazuki Hihara-sempai, who tells her it’s more fun to play when one is having fun doing it; and Azuma Yunoki-sempai, who plays the flute and has a fan club at the school! (He reminded me of the Prince Yuki fan club girls from Furuba ^-^) And the other contestants consist of first year music students Keichii Shimizu-kun, who plays the cello, and Shoko Fuyuumi-chan, who plays the clarinet. The coordinator for the event is Hiroto Kanazawa-sensei, who seems to be very laid back kind of guy.

Facing prejudice coupled with some animosity from a fellow contestant, Kaho-chan has to not only prove to everyone that she is worthy of being in the competition, but also has to prove it to herself that she can do this.

Filled with comedic moments as well as serious ones interlaced in-between the wonderful panels and beautiful music, Kure-san’s first manga is simply fantabulous. La Corda d’Oro is Yuki Kure’s first manga. And for a first one, this reader is quite happy to have stumbled upon this lucky find! Her panels are simple yet intricate. And the story line flows naturally.

I give this ten Pocky sticks! ^-^ (It’s currently what I have left … I ate all the other ones so yea…) Yay! Yummy !!

If you like gorgeous boys coupled with magic and music, then this manga is for you!

Though, this type of manga is better as an anime because you actually get to hear the performers perform. The manga is a good supplement to the anime in my opinion.
