I’ve seen this movie just recently but I’ve heard about it a long time ago. I’ve heard great reviews and whenever people make their list of their favorite anime movies, Princess Mononoke has to be in that list, up until now. So what held me back all this time from watching this movie? It’s the image that you see in the upper-left corner of this article. I’m not really sure why but when I first saw this picture from an anime magazine that had its review, I was turned-off. Probably it’s the blood on her mouth, but I’m still uncertain. It’s a mystery even to myself up to this moment. I was making my shoping list of Anime movies when a friend suggested that I should get Princess Mononoke and according to him, “It’s a must see for any anime fans”, his exact words. I stil had a few bucks to allocate so I placed it in my list. Then one day I was bored, I wanted to see some anime movie, I put the Princess Mononoke DVD in my player and told myself, “I will just watch it for a few minutes, if I don’t find it interesting, I’ll save it for some other time”. So I watched it and to my surprise, I never hit the eject button. What a great movie indeed!
Princess Mononoke is about a “war” in the jungle, between humans and the forest animals. This two-hour long movie is mainly action, drama, and fantasy. It was released in Japan 10 years ago and in the US around 1999 to 2000.
The main character in the story is Ashitaka. He tried to save his town from a demon. Although he killed it, he was left with a curse in his arm. That curse will eventually kill him so in an attempt to save his own life, he went to the forest to look for the “Forest Spirit” hoping it can save him. Along his journey, he was caught between the fight of the humans and the forest animals.
Everything about this movie is awesome, especially the story. The animation is very good, doesn’t use too much computer graphics like in most new anime titles, and that’s just the way I like it.
Just like what my anime buddy told me, “It’s a must see for any anime fans”. See this movie and I can safely say that there’s a great chance that you’re gonna love it. Most people put it in their top anime movies list, I did too, and most probably you will too after you watch it.
