Fate/Stay Night

Darren Pangan   February 4, 2007

In 2006, Fate/Stay Night is one of the most talked about and anticipated anime series. So, if you’re active in anime commuties, probably you’ve heard a lot of positive reviews about this anime. I was once again intrigued by all the recommendations and so I got myself a copy of the whole series and watched a few episodes every night until I finished the whole thing.

Emiya Shirou and SaberFate/Stay Night falls under my favorite genre, a mix of fantasy, action, comedy, and drama. Actually, I feel like there’s a perfect balance when it comes to those three basic genres I mentioned. Unlike in other series, you get good action and comedy, but the drama is sort of mediocre. The series is composed of 24 episodes so your safe from those time-wasting fillers of long anime series like Naruto, Bleach, and One Piece. The setting of the story looked like a present day Japan. The city where the setting took place became a battle field for sorcerers and their servants.

The main character in the story is Emiya Shirou, a student in Fuyuki City. Ten years ago (in the anime’s timeline, of course), a massive fire burned a part of the city killing a lot of innocent people. Emiya Shirou is one of the victims, although he survived the inferno, his parents were killed. Since then, he was adopted by a man named Emiya Kiritsugu. This man became his foster father and his hero. Later on, Shirou found out that he’s foster father was a sorcerer who fought the Holy Grail War, and it is his destiny to fight this war as well. One day, while under attack by a sorcerer’s servant named Lancer, Shirou accidentally summoned his own servant, Saber. Saber is a pretty cool character. She’s a strong blonde woman who uses an invisible sword.

Rin TosakaFate/Stay Night is stuffed with great characters. My favorite is Rin Tosaka, another sorcerer who became Shirou’s ally and the one who thought him about the war. Her servant is named Archer. There is also Ilyasviel, a young girl who’s the master of the strongest and most dangerous servant, Berserker.

As you can see from the screenshots, the animation is pretty good. The movements are fluid which makes a very good and exciting fighting scenes.

After finishing the whole series, Fate/Stay Night easily became my favorite short series, taking the first spot from Elfen Lied. Like I said earlier, the comedy/action/drama is well balanced, that is, not very concentrated on the action unlike other anime series. As a matter of fact, the ending of the series made me feel really sad. The emotion can really get you carried away. I didn’t find anything negative to comment on in the series.

I recommend this to anyone no matter what genre you enjoy watching. I think anyone can really appreciate this series, probably even non-anime fans. It’s that good. ^_^

I am watching this right now (through NetFlix) and I absolutely love it. And yes, I do have to agree with you, the animation is well-done and the plot is interesting.

Of course, I just finished watching Chrono Crusade and then, started on this right after. It was a good transition ^_^
