Ninja Cadets! Anime Movie Review

Darren Pangan   January 23, 2007

Ninja Cadets! CoverThere’s one thing I noticed about anime series or movies that have ninjas. Most of them (but still not all) have awesome fight scenes. Maybe because ninjas are really cool characters. They’re fast and use a lot of weapons including magic. That’s one of those things people like about Naruto. But I’m not going to make another Naruto review here. Instead, let’s talk about another great anime called Ninja Cadets.

This 2-part OAV has 60 minutes of run time. The time when the story happened was in an old Feudal Japan in a town where ninja clans still exist. The anime is a mix of comedy and action. It contained some nudity during a hot spring bathing scene and violence especially in the first part.

The story began with the annihilation of the Byakuro clan. Almost everyone was killed in the attack including women and children. It was Kabusu who’s behind the attack and what he wanted was to capture the Byakuro princess who was said to possess great power. Fortunately, the attackers failed to capture the princess who was, at that time, still an infant. Some of the people of Byakuro were able to escape and took the princess with them. A few years later, the princess grew up along with her fellow survivors. Five of them were still learning the way of the ninjas - Matsuri, Sakura, Yume, Hayashi, and Pochi. They were lead by Kaoru. One day, these students were sent on a mission to retrieve a scroll from the Byakuro castle. They didn’t know that Kabusu’s men were watching them closely and were after the Byakuro princess.

The movie that I watched was an English dubbed version. I didn’t pay much attention to the music and that probably meant that it was OK but nothing special for me to notice.

ScreenshotAll-in-all, this two part film was pretty exciting. The action and fight scenes were great and comparable to Naruto (as they’re both anime about ninjas). The characters were pretty interesting too. Everyone had their unique personalities so they made up a great team. There’s nothing very complicated about the story. Doesn’t have a very deep meaning and stuff like that but I think that’s just the way it was supposed to be since this is a martial arts action anime.

Don’t let the minors watch this because it contains partial nudity and a lot of violence. But for those of us who are above 18 years of age and loves martial arts anime action, we can enjoy this film pretty well.
