Good Anime Series with Stand-Alone Episodes
Darren Pangan January 21, 2007
On March 2006, I wrote an article about why anime is popular. One of the things that I pointed out in that article is that some anime series tend to get their viewers hooked.
Most Anime series manage to get the viewers “hooked”. By purposely keeping the story hanging at the end of every episode, viewers tend to watch out for the next and they would never want to miss out an episode.
Although most of the time, having continuous episodes makes up a good anime series, there are also some anime series that I’ve seen with stand-alone episodes but still manages to get their viewers hooked (to say the least, they got me, my friends, and my brothers hooked). Here they are:
Detective Conan
This anime is also known as “Case Closed” and it came out in January of 1996. The main character in the story is Shinichi Kudo a.k.a Conan Edogawa. Shinichi is a 17 year old high-school student who is very good at solving crimes (ala Sherlock Holmes). One of his enemies turned him into a little boy using some kind of drug. Being a little kid didn’t stop him from solving crimes and murders around their town. Each episode of the series usually contains one case to be solved. Your not going to miss a lot by skipping some episodes but as for me, I didn’t want to miss a episode because the stories are so good.
Doraemon
This has got to be the funniest anime show that I know of. And because of that, I was stuck on TV laughing everytime it’s on. My brother is a big fan of this show. He really likes it so much that he even used the opening theme as his cellphone’s ring tune. The main characters are Doraemon (a robotic cat that came from the future) and Nobita Nobi (a school boy). For almost every episode, Nobita asks for Doraemon for some gadget that he could use to solve his everyday problems. For example, Nobita was afraid of thunder so he asked Doraemon for help. Doraemon gave him a lightning cloud to help him get used to having lightning and thunder.
Rurouni Kenshin
You might be thinking, “Isn’t Rurouni Kenshin a series of continuous episodes?”. And the answer is yes, for the most part of it. But if you haven’t noticed, the first part of Rurouni Kenshin, Tokyo Arc, contains more stand-alone episodes than continuous. When I first saw that series, I thought it was gonna be like that for long but I still watched it regularly because the story, atmosphere, and everything about it is simply amazing. You get great fighting scenes, comedy, drama, and moral lessons too (if you need some). But later on, Rurouni Kenshin’s episodes became continuous.
So there you have it. A few anime series with stand-alone episodes that are worth tuning-in to. Do you know one? Post it on the comments section.
