YuYu Hakusho Anime Series Review
Darren Pangan January 15, 2007
Yuyu Hakusho came out in our country and aired by one of our local TV stations. It wasn’t very popular back then and was shown once a week. My brothers and I really liked the series because the story is unique and it had good martial arts fighting elements. After it moved to a bigger TV company, it’s popularity in our country soared up high. Everyone talked about it even adults that you wouldn’t expect to watch Anime.
Yuyu Hakusho is another series that has the three basic elements - action, comedy, and drama, and it has them well balanced. Character growth is also present on the characters and is one of the things that made it exciting. The the time and place where the story took place looks pretty much like the present time. That is if we’re speaking of the human world. In Yuyu Hakusho, there are three worlds - the spirit world, the human world, and the demon world. The series contains 112 episodes that can be divided into four parts - Spirit Detective Saga, Dark Tournament Saga, Chapter Black Saga, Saga of the Three Kings.
The hero in the story is Yusuke Urameshi. Yusuke is a student who gets into a lot of fight and is alway in trouble. He is known as the toughest kid in their school and his greatest rival is another street-brawler named Kazuma Kuwabara. One day, Yusuke’s life change (or should I say ended, but just for a while) when he saved a little boy from getting hit by a car, giving his own life. He ended up in the hands of the rulers of the spirit world who would decide what to do to him. Eventually, they revived him and gave him a work as a spirit detective and his job is to hunt down demons who are up to no good.
Some of the coolest characters appeared in Yuyu Hakusho. There’s Toguro - the big guy who likes to measure his strength by percentages. He and his team faced Yusuke, Kuwabara, and their new friends from the demon world Hiei and Kurama in a tournament held in the underworld. Next in line is Sensui, a former spirit detective who, after reading some book about the brutalities of humans to demons (sounds like irony?), decided to take side with the demons and destroy the human race.
I watched a Tagalog version of Yuyu Hakusho. I was trying to complete videos of its episodes in Japanese but I was unsuccessful. I haven’t seen an English dubbed version but I believe there is one (I’m not sure though but I heard it used to be on Cartoon Network. Any information you have, please put in the comments section).
One thing I didn’t like about the series is the last part where they put up another tournament. I feel like they rushed that one and didn’t turn out as exciting as the Toguro Tournament. I hated the ending to. If I’m going to watch the whole series again, I’ll skip the last saga. But other than that, the whole series is a very good entertainment and I recommend it to everyone.
Yuyu Hakusho is created by Yoshihiro Togashi. The Anime series was aired in Japan from October 10, 1992 up to January 7, 1995.
