The late Dr. Osamu Tezuka is considered by many fans as the Father of Anime and Manga. I believe he deserves it. The conventional styles we see on anime and manga today are patterned on his styles especially when it comes to character design.
Dr. Tezuka was born on November 3, 1928 in the City of Toyonaka located at Osaka, Japan. He spent most of his childhood at Takurazuka, Hyogo Prefecture. As a child, he always loved nature, and eventually, he would use his art to convince people to take care of the environment. He studied medicine and became a physician. But after the second world war, he decided to stick with his true passion. He then gave birth to the popularity of manga in Japan when he published his first piece, the “Diary of Ma-Chan”.
For years that he performed his art and profession, he was able to produce more than 700 mangas. Some of those mangas were animated and became a hit not only in Japan but across the Globe. The first animated series produced in Japan is also Dr. Tezuka’s most famous work, Tetsuwan Atom also known as Astro Boy. I remember watching this anime series when I was very little. I don’t remember any episodes or the story but I will never forget the image of the main character. Another famous work of Dr. Tezuka is “Jungle Taitei” (Jungle Emperor). The manga was animated and Dr. Tezuka’s company, Mushi Productions took part in producing the animated series. The title given for the English version was “Kimba The White Lion” another anime series I remember watching when I was a kid.
The longest running manga that he made was “Black Jack” (1973-1983). It was animated almost ten years after his death. His final work was a story of a boy and a horse, entitled “Blue Blink”. Dr. Tezuka died of stomach cancer even before finishing that one. I saw a few episodes of that anime when it was aired in one of our local TV stations.
Almost every manga artist and animators today still pattern their work with the style invented by Dr. Osamu Tezuka. His creative mind revolutionized the comic and animation industry not only in Japan but in many different countries.
