The Golden Seal was the first of the two movies of Yoshihiro Togashi’s YuYu Hakusho. I saw this film from a video that also contained Ninku The Movie. This movie came out in Japan on July 10, 1993.

Like the series and the second movie, this YuYu Hakusho movie was a combination of comedy and action. When the action started in the movie, it was non-stop that I actually felt like I’m watching a video game. Most of the story happened in the spirit world and the demon world and just a few scenes where shown in the human world (That was when Yusuke Urameshi and Kazuma Kuwabara were fighting a gang). The whole movie was very short and runs for only like 30 minutes (like the Ninku movie). I don’t see any stong connections to the series but it doesn’t overlap as well.

Basically, Koenma was kidnapped by some monster while having his vacation. The monster demanded for the Golden Seal in replace for the spirit world ruler. The Golden Seal was hidden in a vault in Koenma’s office and it was said that whoever possesses it can rule the both the spirit and demon world. Yusuke, Kazuma, Kurama, Hiei, and Botan went out to save Koenma and the non-stop action I was talking about began.

This is actually the only English version of YuYu Hakusho that I saw. I watched the series in Tagalog and Japanese versions and I haven’t seen the English version yet. The same music found in the series was used in this movie.

Like the second YuYu Hakusho movie, it’s not as exciting as the series and I didn’t like it very much. But I still find it better than the second movie. Maybe because it happened so fast that I didn’t reach the point of getting bored unlike the second movie that got me bored to death. The enemy in the story looked really ugly and incomparable to the enemies in the series. But I still think kids will really enjoy this one.
